For anyone who has known our family for a long time, you know our first “baby” wasn’t a human, but a tiny little teacup chihuahua who weighed less than 4 pounds. Her name was Ruby. She lived to be almost 16 years old. She was quite possibly the sweetest, most nurturing, wonderful dog I have ever known. She never had any major health problems, and was always a source of joy to all of us for her whole life.
The first thing people said when they saw her was “AWWWWW!! She is so cute!” And they’re right…she was. She loved people, and she loved all other animals too.
Last week, we found out some devastating news. She had cancer throughout her body, and it was inoperable. She had a lesion on her foot that ruptured, and another on a different leg and both would have caused her great pain. The vet was so sad to tell us that she couldn’t fix it. We were hit with the harsh reality of making the choice no one wants to make. But, we just couldn’t have her suffer. We couldn’t let her final days be painful and horrible. She has been a loyal and incredible part of our family, and we vowed to do what is best for her, as difficult as it was.
So last Friday, we said goodbye. It was so hard. I didn’t want to lose her, but I know it was the most loving choice for her. Until Friday came, my daughter and I re-bandaged her wound each day, to keep her as comfortable as we could. This little dog really had our hearts, and we wanted to do right by her.
My family came over to say goodbye to Ruby, and I am so glad they did. She has been such a fixture…it’s hard to imagine how life will play out without her. Her last days, like her life, were been filled with cuddles, sunshine (her favorite), and her favorite people.
You are now out of pain, my sweet Ruby girl. We love you so much. You lived a good and beautiful life, and enriched ours in the process. We are so thankful for the blessing you were for all these years. We love you, Ruby♥️.
