I have to admit…sometimes I make this recipe just because I want to smell it wafting through the house. I mean, I am guessing that there probably aren’t too many people who don’t love the scent of apples and cinnamon together. For me, it brings a sense of coziness, a bit of whimsy, and of course the anticipation of a delicious treat! The best thing is, this yummy dish can be served as a side to the main dinner, or as a dessert! (HINT: It is incredible on top of vanilla ice cream!)
In addition to the amazing way my house smells when I make this, my other favorite thing about this recipe is that I get to use up the perfectly good apples that no one wants to eat because they are now slightly soft. You know, when they skin gets the tiniest bit rumpled, but there is nothing actually wrong with the apples. Silly kids…don’t they know those are best ones to bake? They’re about to learn the trick!
Our kids both love to help me chop up the apples, which I appreciate because it makes the prep go even quicker. When they were small, I taught them proper cutting technique to avoid knife accidents. I also had them learn to cut things at that young age (4-7 years) with kids’ kitchen knives. They don’t cut fingers, but they do cut food!
Serve this dish WARM for the biggest yumminess factor, and watch the joyful smiles spread across the faces at your table. Enjoy!
