The 10 Easiest Fruits and Veggies to Grow in Your Backyard

So, even though I grew up in a family of talented gardeners, my green thumb comes with much effort and time put into learning. I started out being really good at planting, and then killing, whole gardens. It was so, so sad!!!

The good news is that I am finally getting good at keeping everything alive now! Yay!!! In my many years of experience, some successes and some failures (and in two different states!), I can say that I have learned which fruits and veggies are more likely to do well. Today is a great day to share that list with you, so you, too, can grow your garden and gardening skills simultaneously!

In no particular order, here are my Top 10 (Plus one BONUS, because I just couldn’t leave it out!) seeds to grow in your backyard garden. Each item has its “time to germination” listing in days for your estimation and anticipation, because everyone wants to know when to expect to see the first little bit of green peeking through the soil!

1. Swiss chard (7-14 days)
2. Basil (5-30 days, depending on weather)
3. Lettuces (6-14 days)
4. Sugar snap peas (7-10 days)
5. Tomatoes (6-14 days)
6. Cucumbers (6-10 days)
7. Green onions (10-14 days)
8. Rosemary (14-28 days)
9. Yellow Squash (8-12 days)
10. Carrots (10-21 days)

BONUS: Radishes (4-10 days)
A note on radishes. Not everyone loves the way these crunchy, spicy treats taste, but they’re fun to grow from seeds because they usually germinate and sprout the fastest. They’re also really fun to cut into a rose shape to garnish a veggie appetizer tray.

So, friends, what will YOUR garden grow? Whatever you plant, whatever seeds you sow, don’t forget to sow love and joy right along with them…they always make all the difference.
